Why Strawberries in Substrate?

Picture
Combats Disease and Pests
Potted production combats devastating soil borne disease and pests. By eliminating direct ground contact, we provide a more controlled and protected growing environment, supporting healthier plants.
Picture
Fruit Quality
Substrate growing in a protected environment enables the grower to provide optimal, consistent nutrition to the plant roots allowing for increased fruit quality.

Efficient Harvest
Raised table production provides a faster, more ergonomic harvest, increasing worker productivity. Growing in substrate provides optimal conditions, for the highest yield potential.

Grow Guide

Planting
When you receive Ready-Set-Grow’s strawberry plug plants, they will arrive dormant, typically packed with 250 plugs per crate. For optimal growth, plant 6-8 plugs per linear meter, ensuring the top of the plug is level with the substrate. Plugs should be planted into a porous substrate, such as coco coir. Well draining substrate encourages healthy root development and prevents root rot. Growers can expect fruit production about 60 days from planting.
Planting strawberry plug plants in an elevated trough improves labour efficiency in planting, weeding and harvesting. Growing plug plants in a greenhouse or tunnel structure significantly extends the harvest season.

Growing Environment
Throughout the growing season, monitor irrigation and fertigation strategies for each growing stage: bloom, green fruit and harvest. Always avoid saturated  media in the late afternoon and evening. Frequently adjust irrigation strategies in response to temperature, humidity and light intensity. Stable environmental conditions, especially temperature and humidity, are critical for sustained plant health and steady fruit production.
Pest pressures can be controlled in your growing environment by picking clean, harvesting often and maintaining a weed free growing zone. Biological insects and banker plants are beneficial to growers, aiding in controlling several pests such as Spider Mite, Thrips, and Aphids. Banker plants attract and sustain beneficial insects; at Ready Set Grow we have used Alyssum plants to establish Orius.
